What are Marion County Public Records?

Under Oregon's Public Records Law, Marion County public records include any writing with information regarding the conduct of the public’s business, created, owned, used, or maintained by a public body irrespective of physical form or characteristics. These documents include and are not limited to court records, deeds records, and mortgages. However, ORS 192.345 and 192.355 states some exemptions, such as records of a public agency about litigations, trade secrets, criminal investigations, tests and examinations, real estate appraisals, and civil rights investigations. Asides from the exemptions provided by state law, every person has the right to inspect and make copies of a Marion public record.

Marion County Crime Statistics

The Oregon State Police’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) provides Marion County's annual crime statistics. According to the yearly County System Based Reporting Statistics for the year 2018, Marion County recorded 6,095 offenses and 1,043 arrests. The County's index total was 2,621 offenses and 372 arrests. Compared to the previous year, the county's index total offense and arrest counts increased by 1.52% and 10.8%, respectively.

The county's index crime includes; three murders, 24 rapes, 25 robberies, 27 aggravated assaults, 396 burglaries, 1,762 larcenies, 376 motor vehicle thefts, and eight arson. Burglary and larceny were the only two categories to experience an increase.Marion County’s index crime rate was 758.8 crimes per 100,000 population. Compared to the previous year, the county's index crime rate increased by 0.11%.

Are Marion County Criminal Records Public?

The CJIS Division of the state police performs Marion County criminal record checks. The CJIS allows citizens to request personal and third-party criminal histories. A private Marion criminal record check costs $33, while the CJIS charges $10 per report when requesting criminal history for someone else. Requests must pay an additional $5 to notarize the document. Other requirements for a license include a completed form and a rolled fingerprint card. To request records, requesters must download and complete the ‘Request Own Records’ form. For in-person requests, the CJIS office in Salem offers fingerprinting service during regular business hours. The fingerprint service provider may charge an additional fee for the service. Individuals making in-person requests at the Salem office may pay with a MasterCard or Visa debit or credit card. When requesting someone else's criminal history report, download and complete this request form. Note that the CJIS provides limited access to another person’s criminal history record, and the agency will not notarize a criminal history report requested by someone else.

The Oregon State Police Sex Offender Unit maintains a statewide database of all registered predatory sex offenders. To locate a registered sex offender living in Marion County, interested parties can search the state’s sex offender registry. Searches can be conducted by the offender's name. How to Find Marion County Inmate Records?

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office provides information on current inmates and offenders on its website.
